Area under organic farming

Organic farming in Hungary stagnated at around 2.4 % between 2009 and 2015, but has been increasing since then. As a result of the expansion of support opportunities, the proportion of agricultural land under organic farming increased by a factor of 2.5 between 2012 and 2022 (the share was 6.3 % in 2022). In 2023, 320 251 ha were under regulated organic farming, more than half of which was grassland (55 %), but arable land also accounted for a significant proportion (36.5 %). From 2012 to 2023, the number of organic farmers almost quadrupled, and livestock also increased significantly. There is growing interest in organic food from consumers.

In 2022, the 2022–2027 national action plan for the development of organic farming was completed; it structures the development directions of the sector around seven areas of action. Its main goal is to further increase the area under organic farming. This is also facilitated by the new five-year programme supporting organic farming, which was launched in January 2025 within the framework of the common agricultural policy strategic plan.
