Greece has expanded its network of protected areas, with initiatives to enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism. Programmes promoting eco-friendly tourism bring new revenue opportunities to the local communities, although traditional businesses may resist subsequent restrictions. Challenges remain, including those relating to the enforcement of environmental laws and strengthening community interaction.
As of recent data, approximately 35% of Greece’s terrestrial area and about 18% of its marine waters are part of the Natura 2000 network or other types of designated protected areas. This shows a commitment to environmental conservation, though challenges remain as regards law enforcement and effective management.
The increase in designated protected areas aligns with national efforts and EU strategies to address climate change and biodiversity loss, but work is needed to manage and effectively protect these areas from pressures and threats linked to human activities.
