See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The share of renewable energy sources (RESs) has been steadily increasing in Germany since 2005. It has grown by 0.8 percentage points per year, reaching 19.1% in 2020. Since the update of the Renewable Energy Directive in 2020, the increase in share remained at 0.8 percentage points per year, reaching 21.6% in 2023. The share increased in parallel with the uptake of RESs, while at the same time total energy consumption decreased. Both developments contributed to the growing RES share.
The most dynamic growth of RESs has been achieved in the power sector, where a share of 52.3% was achieved in 2023, representing a fivefold increase since 2005. At the same time, the heating sector (with a share of 17.1%) and the transport sector (11.9%) experienced only very moderate growth, leaving more room for improvement, as they account for about three quarters of final energy consumption.
At present, the share of RESs is still well below the national target of 41% defined in the integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). The NECP includes an indicative target trajectory. So far, the development of renewables matches the trajectory, but growth rates need to increase substantially by 2030.
