See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of the EU’s agricultural land used for organic farming and the distance to the target of a 25% share as set by the European Green Deal.
The share of organically farmed land in Germany rose from 5.8% to 9.8% between 2012 and 2022. Accordingly, the total area of organic farming recorded a small but steady increase in the period under review. Although a comparatively strong increase was recorded from 2016 to 2020 in particular, the annual percentage increase fluctuated from year to year. The reasons for these fluctuations are varied and influenced by political incentives, the demand for organic food and factors such as the changing prices of conventional products or financial support for renewable energy. In order to achieve the EU’s political goal of 25% organic farming by 2030, the annual increase would have to roughly quadruple. It is therefore important to identify obstacles, take efficient measures to remove them and provide continuous and sufficient financial support and planning security. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity has therefore developed the organic farming strategy for 2030 in a participatory multistakeholder process. It contains 30 measures aiming to create the right framework conditions and remove existing obstacles along the entire value chain.
