See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
In 2023, the share of renewable energies in gross final energy consumption in France reached 22.3%, according to the conventions of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources. This directive, called the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), sets out the methods for calculating the share of renewable energy in gross final consumption. Gross final consumption includes energy supplied to industry, transport, households, services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, as well as electricity and heat consumption by the energy branch and grid losses.
The target to be achieved is 33% in 2030, according to France’s climate energy law. RED III sets a revised target of 42.5%.
The share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption in France has increased by 13 percentage points since 2005. Since 2005, gross final consumption of renewable energy has been increasing by 5% per year, while total gross final consumption is decreasing by 0.9% per year. The increase of 1.8 percentage points in 2022 is due to the increase in renewable energy consumption, in a context of energy sobriety and rising energy prices.
