Primary energy consumption in Czechia has been fluctuating, with a slightly decreasing trend overall, and it reached 1 598 PJ in 2023. Final energy consumption (FEC) has also been fluctuating, with a slightly increasing trend overall (see graph), reaching a level of 953 PJ in 2023. In 2023, 31% of energy in Czechia is consumed by the transport sector, 29% by households and 26% by industry. Most of the total fuel and energy consumed in households is used for heating and the level of consumption is dependent on weather conditions. FEC in transport has shown an upward trend. The most energy-demanding type of transport was road transport, which accounted for 97% of total FEC in transport in 2023. Despite its energy-intensive base, energy consumption in industry has been steadily decreasing due to legislative and economic initiatives. Despite legislative measures and economic support aimed at reducing the energy intensity of public buildings and infrastructure and increasing the efficiency of technological processes, Czechia is currently not on track to meet 2030 energy consumption targets.
