Organic production in Cyprus has made rapid progress in the past 10 years. According to the register of the Department of Agriculture, the area under organic farming has grown from 0.22 % of the total cultivated area in 2003 to about 8 % in 2025. It is worth mentioning that in this respect Cyprus has already exceeded the target set in the national action plan for organic production, namely 7.5 % by 2025. In addition, the number of organic farmers has risen from 85 in 2003 to 1 600 in 2025. Acknowledging the valuable contribution of the organic farming sector in Cyprus and the difficulties it faces, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment made the development of organic production a high priority in the context of the strategic plan of the common agricultural policy for 2023–2027. Specifically, through the plan’s interventions for rural development (as set out in Section 1.4 ‘Organic farming’), with a total budget of EUR 21 927 000, significant incentives are given to farmers, livestock breeders and beekeepers to increase their organic production area.
