The total numbers of manufacturers and processors of organic products, along with the areas under organic production, steadily increased between 2013 and 2022. In 2023, the share of organic farming within the utilised agricultural area in Croatia decreased to 8.1% (119 873 ha). Regarding the structure of areas under organic production, more than half are pastures, followed by arable crops (mostly green forage and wheat) and permanent crops. The vegetable-growing sector has significant potential for improvement, as only 0.5% of the total arable crop area is currently designated for organically grown vegetables. In 2023, most animals in organic farming were sheep and cattle, while rates of pig and poultry farming remained low.
To further boost the organic sector in Croatia, the 2023–2030 national action plan for the development of organic agriculture was adopted. It consists of 40 measures divided into groups: supporting the transfer of knowledge, producing and processing agricultural products, producing organic plant reproductive materials, fostering an association of producers and marketing, increasing demand for organic products, supporting research on and the development of new technologies, and addressing the intersection of organic agriculture, environmental concerns and climate change.
