Organic production methods were applied in an area spanning 147 798.18 ha in Bulgaria in 2023 (including areas in a period of transition and fully organic areas). In 2022 and 2023, there were significant increases in these areas compared with previous years: a 28% increase in 2022 and 34% increase in 2023. With these increases, in 2023 the area under the control system for organic products reached 2.9% of the utilised agricultural area in Bulgaria. In 2023, 36 723.34 ha were declared areas of ‘organic crop production’, of which 10 829.22 ha were areas in a period of transition and 25 894.12 ha were fully organic areas. Estimates of the future growth of organic farming areas have been calculated. According to these estimates, the areas under the control system will increase by 5% and reach 252 877 ha by 2025, and by 2027 the areas under the control system will reach 6.98% or 354 279 ha.
By the end of 2023, there was also an increase in the organic operators registered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (a 3% increase from 2022), representing 6.35% of the total registered agricultural producers (a slight increase in 2022/2023).
