See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of material recovered and fed back into the economy – and thus saving extraction of primary raw materials – in overall material use.
The circular material use rate (CMUR) for Austria more than doubled from 6.8% in 2010 to 14.3% in 2023. This trend was influenced by a slight decrease in domestic material consumption (from 155.9 Mt to 154.49 Mt, dominated by a 4.2 Mt reduction in fossil-fuel-based energy) and by the amount of recycled waste more than doubling (from 11.3 Mt to 25.2 Mt). That means, the transition from fossil fuels to a renewable energy supply and the enhancement of recycling have been the main drivers of the change in the CMUR.
With respect to the Austrian circular economy strategy, the CMUR should be increased to 18% by 2030. This should be achieved by implementing a package of circular economy measures in order to transform key value chains. For instance, measures have been defined for the construction and building sector in order to extend the lifetimes of buildings, enhance the reuse of building components and boost recycling.
