Radar satellite derived ice thickness charts over the Baltic Sea make shipping and navigating in the region safer. The charts are delivered to ships, local government and are continuously updated on the Internet. The information is generated on a routine basis and delivered only 30 minutes after satellite data receipt. The colours indicate ice thickness in mid-March, where blue areas bear 10 – 20 centimetres of ice, green areas 30 to 60 centimetres and yellow areas yield ice depths beyond. The image also indicates that the ice road to Hailuto Island is safe for road traffic. Copyright: ESA Polar View, Finnish Meteorological Institute
