Researchers, environmental technicians, representatives of the administration and of regional, national and European institutions, and social and economic stakeholders will come together at the International Symposium on climate change in mountain areas in Pamplona on 6 November.

Organised by the Pyrenees Climate Change Observatory (OPCC) and with the slogan “Observation for adaptation”, the registration period is now open for this cross-border conference, which provides an opportunity to seek synergies to facilitate collaborative work on adaptation to climate change in mountain areas.

Adaptation, the core theme of the meeting

Mountain areas have been identified as particularly sensitive to climate change, including the Pyrenees massif. For this reason, as well as continuing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, tools and measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change must also be developed.

In addition to environmental impacts, climate change affects all activities taking place in these mountain areas: grazing, agriculture, winter tourism, forest development, among others.

Thus, adaptation to climate change is a key dimension to be taken into account when proposing any social or economic activity in mountain regions.

Pyrenees Climate Change Observatory

The Pyrenees Climate Change Observatory is an initiative which was set up by the Working Community of the Pyrenees (CTP) in 2010. It is funded by the Spain-France-Andorra Operational Programme for Territorial Cooperation 2007-2013 (POCTEFA).

Beyond monitoring cross-border climate evolution, the Observatory aims to provide key tools and information to facilitate the adaptation of the most vulnerable socio-economic sectors and natural systems of the Pyrenean territory.

As a platform for the exchange of scientific information, the Observatory provides researchers, administrators and social and economic stakeholders with numerous tools on climate change in the Pyrenees by means of its website: www.opcc-ctp.org

Overview of the programme

The meeting will take place at the Pamplona Planetarium on 6 November with a programme based around two central thematic blocks.

In the morning, presentations will focus on European mountainous areas, seeking to highlight common problems and initiatives which are transferable between different areas.

Participants will include the European Environment Agency, the Carpathian Convention, as well as representatives of the Regional Council of Languedoc-Roussillon and the Pyrenees Ecology Institute.

In the afternoon, the work that the Pyrenees Climate Change Observatory has carried out through its partners within the framework of its 2011-2013 action programme will be presented in the Planetarium dome. The following themes will be presented: climate, water, forests, natural risks, biodiversity, remote sensing and adaptation. To close the Symposium, and as one of the challenges of our time, the question of climate change in the media will be addressed.
