Growth in private vehicle ownership has been shown to lead to an increase in the use of private vehicles and in subsequent environmental effects, while decreasing the attractiveness of public transport or non-motorised transport modes. While the number of passenger cars per capita increased by 20 % between 2000 and 2013, the number of buses per capita remained stable. The number of trucks per unit of GDP (truck intensity) increased slightly between 2005 and 2013 and is generally higher in the EU-13, with Bulgaria and Poland displaying the highest values in 2013. In the EU-28, the percentage of diesel cars in the total car fleet continues to increase. In 2013, 38 % of the EU-28 car fleet had diesel engines.
