Key messages

The efficiency of electricity and heat production from conventional thermal power plants in EU-27 countries improved between 1990 and 2011 by 5.2 percentage points (from 45.4% in 1990 to 50.6% in 2011). The EEA shows an equal trend, also with an improvement of 5.2 percentage points (from 45.2% in 1990 to 50.4% in 2011). Between 2005 and 2011, there was a decline in efficiency of electricity and heat production from conventional thermal power plants of 1.7 percentage points (from 52.3% in 2005 to 50.6% in 2011) in the EU-27 because of lower heat production.
