Concentrations are expressed as annual mean concentrations. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of groundwater bodies/river stations/lake stations included per country is given in metadata (see downloads and more info). Additional information

  • Only stations with time series consisting of minimum seven years are included. The number of stations included per country is given in parenthesis.
  • Nitrate in groundwater: AT (26), BE (25), BG (53), DE (115), DK (43), EE (5), FI (33), HU (18), IE (66), LI (1), LT (6), LV (2), NL (9), PT (4), SE (3), SI (8), SK (10).
  • Nitrate in rivers (* = total oxidized nitrogen): AL (6), AT (145), BE (29), BG (79), CH (6), CZ (70), DE (147), DK* (39), EE (49), ES (356), FI* (143), FR (315), HU* (98), IE (5), LT (28), LU (3), LV (39), NL (9), NO (10), PL (106), SE* (113), SI (24), SK (53), UK (149).
  • Orthophosphate in rivers: AL (5), AT (124), BE (31), BG (68), CH (6), CZ (70), DE (144), DK (41), EE (53), ES (155), FI (129), FR (295), HU (98), IE (6), LT (28), LU (1), LV (39), NO (10), SE (113), SI (24), SK (24), UK (79).
  • Total phosphorus in lakes: AT (5), CH (15), DE (7), DK (20), EE (8), FI (183), HU (11), IE (8), LT (4), LV (8), NL (7), PL (1), SE (165), SI (4), UK (18).

  • Some countries measure nitrate plus nitrite (NO2+ NO3) = total Oxidized nitrogen - as nitrite (NO2) is usually a few percent of total Oxidized nitrogen,  total Oxidized Nitrogen has been used for some countries (marked by *).
