Waterbase is the generic name given to the EEA's databases on the status and quality of Europe's rivers, lakes, groundwater bodies and transitional, coastal and marine waters, and on the quantity of Europe's water resources

European data

Waterbase - Lakes (5 tables)

The dataset contains data on nutrients, organic matter, hazardous substances and other chemical determinands in water, proxy pressure data on the upstream catchments and physical characteristics of the WISE-SoE lake monitoring stations. ***WARNING:*** Records, where errors and other quality issues and inconsistencies have been detected, have been removed from the dataset only in the most severe cases (missing primary key values, duplicates...). The other "problematic" records are left in. Each data table contains a set of special QA fields which are used to flag the particular quality issues detected in the individual records. The QA fields and flag codes are described in the QA documentation.

Waterbase - Biology in lakes (3 tables)

This separate dataset contains data for the biological quality elements (BQEs) phytobenthos and macroinvertebrates from WISE-SoE lake monitoring stations. The data are reported as ecological quality ratios (EQRs) (for more explanation, see illustration in additional information part) together with information on the national classification systems for ecological status. The dataset is a result of the first regular data flow for Biological elements in rivers and lakes (2011) and it is the first time the biological data are published in Waterbase. In the next updates the data will be published in one dataset together with the other Waterbase lakes data.

Additional information

Waterbase contains timely, reliable and policy-relevant data collected from EEA member countries through the WISE-SoE data collection (formerly known as Eionet-Water and Eurowaternet) process. WISE-SoE data collection selects validated monitoring data from national databases and adds information on the physical characteristics of the water bodies being monitored and on the pressures potentially affecting water quality. The added value of Waterbase is that data collected through the WISE-SoE data collection process are from statistically stratified monitoring stations and groundwater bodies and are comparable at the European level. Waterbase data are primarily used in the production of the EEA's indicator-based factsheets.
