Transportefterspørgslen hænger nøje sammen med den økonomiske aktivitet: I opgangstider stiger den økonomiske produktion, varetransporten øges, og flere personer rejser. Transportens påvirkning på menneskers helbred, miljøet og klimaændringerne hænger nøje sammen med det valgte brændstof. Der findes allerede rene, alternative brændstoffer, herunder elektricitet, som kan være bæredygtige alternativer til benzin og dieselolie. Turlængden har betydning, når brændstoftypens egnethed skal fastlægges.

Final energy consumption in Europe by mode of transport The annual energy consumption of transport in the EEA-33 grew by 38 % between 1990 and 2007.  However the impacts of the economic recession caused a subsequent decline in transport demand. Between 2007 and 2013, energy demand decreased by 9 %. Overall, between 1990 and 2013, there was a 25 % net growth in the energy consumption of transport in the EEA-33. The shipping sector saw the greatest decline in energy consumption during the economic recession; it dropped by 10 % between 2008 and 2009 alone, with a total decrease of 20 % between 2007 and 2013. Total energy use for road, aviation and rail transport fell by 7% between 2007 and 2013. Road transport accounts for the largest share of energy consumption, with 74 % of the total EEA-33 demand in 2013. Despite a decrease in energy consumption since the recession, road transport energy consumption in 2013 was still 23 % higher than in 1990. The fraction of diesel used in road transport has continued to increase, amounting to 71% of total fuel sales in 2013 .

Mappe Trends and projections in Europe The EEA’s annual report on Trends and Projections in Europe updates the progress assessments of the EU and European countries towards their climate mitigation and energy targets. It also sets sights forward towards the EU’s 2020 and new 2030 targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy generation and improving energy efficiency. The assessments in the Trends and Projections in Europe report draw on the most recent data on EU and Member States’ progress to their climate and energy targets. These include: EU’s and Member States’ GHG inventory, Member States’ Effort Sharing datasets, Member States’s GHG projections, Proxy estimates of greenhouse gas emissions in the most recent year.

As such, more and more cars are sold in Europe, the majority of which are diesel powered. And while engines are becoming more efficient, this growth means GHG emissions are a major concern.
