Measuring and providing long term sea surface temperature measurements on a regular or even daily basis over many years can only be achieved by using satellite data. In the vast areas of the open oceans local measurements of sea surface temperatures from ships are rare and the network of ocean buoys is scarce. Global and regional Sea Surface Temperature datasets are being used for environmental studies, oceanographic analysis and for climate modelling. Copyright: ESA; CLS
