The learning objectives for the overall programme cover three dimensions – why, what and how to do integrated environmental assessments. These will be shared objectives for all days along with emphasis on the need for bespoke approaches to IEA depending on the questions and context. The presentations and exercises will draw on EEA experience and show how these tools have been applied at EEA.

THE EEA SUMMER SCHOOL

The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union. Our task is to
provide objective, reliable and comparable information on the environment. We are a major
information source for those involved in developing, adopting, implementing and evaluating
environmental policy, and also the general public. Currently, the EEA has 331 member and
6 cooperating countries2. The EEA key mandate is to achieve the aims of environmental
protection and improvement laid down by the Treaty and by successive Community action
programmes on the environment, as well as of sustainable development.
In the performance of that mandate we are streamlining our activities, creating new ways of
working, and developing new methods to bring environmental thinking into the
mainstream of economic and social policy making.

The EEA West Balkan Summer School on “Integrated Environmental Assessment” is part of
such an effort to build networked capacity within its cooperating states. It builds on the EEA
expertise and scientific advances on these issues. It is designed to enhance critical reflection
and key working competences within a vibrant and collaborative community of practitioners
in the field.
