Nitrate concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2010 in different sea regions of Europe.
-
The sea region data series are calculated as the average of annual mean data from river monitoring stations in each sea region. The data thus represents rivers or river basins draining into that particular sea. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per sea region is given in parentheses.

Nitrate concentrations in rivers between 1992 and 2008 in different geographical regions of Europe.
-
The data series per region are calculated as the average of the annual mean for river monitoring stations in the region. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of river monitoring stations included per geographical region is given in parentheses.

The sea region data series are calculated as the average of annual mean data from river monitoring stations in each sea region. The data thus represents rivers or river basins draining into that particular sea. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). Two regions are not shown in the figure due to a lack of data (Barents Sea: 1 station, Norwegian Sea: 2 stations); these stations have NO3 concentrations below 0.8 mg/l N.

Nitrate concentrations in groundwater between 1992 and 2010 in different geographical regions of Europe.

The data series per region are calculated as the average of the annual mean for groundwater bodies (GWBs) in the region. Only complete series after inter/extrapolation are included (see indicator specification). The number of groundwater bodies included per geographical region is given in parentheses.

Water management in Europe faces rising challenges as ecosystems weaken
-
Water pollution and excessive water use are still harming ecosystems, which are indispensable to Europe’s food, energy, and water supplies. To maintain water ecosystems, farming, planning, energy and transport sectors need to actively engage in managing water within sustainable limits.

Trend in median total ammonium, total phosphorus and nitrate concentration of river water bodies, grouped by ecological status/potential class
-
Concentrations are expressed as a median of annual mean concentrations. Up to three-year gaps of missing values have been interpolated or extrapolated. Only complete series with no missing values after this interpolation/extrapolation are included. The number of time series/river stations is shown in parentheses. The trend for 1992 to 2010 for each of the ecological quality classes has been linearly extended to 2027 — or when the concentration level becomes negative.
