Energy efficiency can contribute to socio-economic development and better quality of life. The benefits it brings include greater energy security, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution, lower energy infrastructure spending, less energy poverty, better public health and industrial competitiveness, and jobs creation.

The EU aims to improve energy efficiency by 20 % by 2020. To achieve this, countries have set national indicative energy efficiency targets.

The European Energy Efficiency Index improves understanding of the progress EU Member States are making towards reducing energy consumption in different sectors, as well as sectoral contributions to indicative national targets.

The index is designed to complement ongoing EEA activities that aim to monitor progress towards climate and energy objectives.
