Air pollution

Air pollution harms human health and the environment. In Europe, emissions of many air pollutants have decreased substantially over the past decades, resulting in improved air quality across the region. However, air pollutant concentrations are still too high, and air quality problems persist. Air pollution harms human health and the environment. In Europe, emissions of many air pollutants have decreased substantially over the past decades, resulting in improved air quality across the region. However, air pollutant concentrations are still too high, and air quality problems persist. A significant proportion of Europe’s population live in areas, especially cities, where exceedances of air quality standards occur: ozone, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter (PM) pollution pose serious health risks. Several countries have exceeded one or more of their 2010 emission limits for four important air pollutants. Reducing air pollution therefore remains important.
Policy context — 10 Jul 2008
Within the European Union, the Seventh Environment Action Programme (7EAP) aims to achieve levels of air quality that do not result in unacceptable impacts on, and risks to, human health and the environment. The EU acts at many levels to reduce exposure to air pollution: through legislation, through co-operation with sectors responsible for air pollution, through national, regional authorities and non-government organisations and through research. EU policies aim to reduce exposure to air pollution by reducing emissions and setting limits and target values for air quality.

Data centre overview
The air pollution data centre provides access to data and information related to the amount of air pollutants emitted into the atmosphere from different anthropogenic (human-made) sources as well as measured ambient air pollution at monitoring stations across Europe. The air pollution data centre also provides access to related products for air pollution indicators and assessments. Priority is given to providing policy-relevant data and information for European and national institutions, professionals, researchers and the public.

Folder Air pollution country fact sheets (2014) — 19 Nov 2014
These country fact sheets summarise key data on air pollution for each of the 33 EEA member countries and the whole EU-28. Indicators on past and future emission trends are presented, as well as a summary of the national air quality situation in each country.
