The Water Framework Directive (WFD) intends to protect and restore clean surface waters and groundwater across Europe. According to the WFD, Member States (MS) have to prepare management plans for their river basins. Of the 17 plans submitted so far, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has developed interactive maps based on quality checked water data from 11 plans. The maps display statistics at country or river basin district level and allow users to zoom in and check the state of major European surface and groundwater bodies.
An
additional interactive map showing the Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZ) as
designated by MS under the Nitrate Directive has also been developed. Users can
both zoom in and combine different layers of information including river
monitoring stations and the position of urban waste water treatment plants.
