Projections of NO_x and NO₂ levels without additional measures at selected sections of highways have been modelled up to 2020 (Umweltbundesamt 2008b). Due to primary NO₂ emissions caused by diesel vehicle aftertreatment systems, NO₂ levels will remain as they have been in recent years until 2013. From then on a decrease can be expected despite an increase in traffic volume.
