Share of country designated as terrestrial protected area and the overlap between Natura 2000 or Emerald sites and national designations
The overlap for Norway and Switzerland relates to Emerald Network sites. For all other countries the overlap relates to Natura 2000 sites. Statistics on national designations are based on data reported by EEA countries to the Nationally designated areas (CDDA) database.

Complementarity between European designations (Natura 2000 and Emerald networks) and national designations by share of terrestrial area
The overlap for Switzerland relates to Emerald Network sites rather than Natura 2000 sites. CDDA = Common Database of Designated Areas; N2000 = Natura 2000.

European protected sites
The map shows an overview of protected sites in Europe. The EU’s Natura 2000 network and the Bern Convention’s Emerald Network are ecological networks of protected areas, set up to ensure the survival of Europe's most valuable species and habitats. Information about protected areas designated at national levels is reported by the 38 countries of Eionet.
Data completeness of national reports on derogations and exceptions
This dashboard presents statistics about the completeness of the information in the national reports on derogations. It shows the percentage of derogations for which mandatory fields of the reporting form have been filled in. This dashboard does not provide any assessment of the reported derogations
Derogations and exceptions table
This dashboard presents detailed information on individual derogations/exceptions, as extracted from the national reports that have been submitted to the European Commission. Click on a derogation to see more information below the table
Natura 2000 Barometer
The Natura 2000 Barometer provides an overview of the Natura 2000 network of sites covered by the EU’s Birds and the Habitats Directives, giving information on area and site numbers. The Natura 2000 network coverage in EU's seas is 10.5% (by the end of 2023).

Timeliness of submission – Birds Directive article 12 – reporting from Member States
Article 12 of the Birds Directive requires Member States to report about the progress made with the implementation of the Directive. A report is sent to the European Commission every 6 years following an agreed format. These scoreboards provide information on timeliness of data delivery by Member States for the reporting 2013-2018.

State of nature in the EU
Results from reporting under the nature directives 2007-2012. This report describing the state of nature in the EU is based on reports from Member States under the Birds and the Habitats directives and on subsequent assessments at EU or EU biogeographical levels. It provides comprehensive facts and figures on the status and trends of the species and habitats covered by the two EU nature directives, fully underpinned by the numerous reports submitted by Member States in 2013.
