Figure D source code Trends in energy efficiency and ownership rates of household appliances and electricity consumption in households, EU-27
The figure shows trends in energy efficiency of appliances (dishwasher, TV, washing machine) compared to ownership numbers of these appliances and total electricity consumption for lighting and appliances per dwelling. The figure illustrates that increasing ownership of appliances is more than offsetting gains from energy efficiency improvements in individual appliances.

Highlight Circular economy to have considerable benefits, but challenges remain
The environmental benefits of adopting a circular economy in Europe could be considerable – reducing waste, and minimising the continent’s heavy dependence on imports of raw materials. A new report published today by the European Environment Agency (EEA) draws attention to both the benefits and challenges of such an economic transition. The report also describes possible ways to measure progress and highlights the areas where more attention is required from research and policy in order to turn the concept into reality.

Figure Drivers of the change in average annual energy consumption per household in the EU-27 between 1990 and 2008
The energy consumption of households is decomposed in different explanatory effects: change in average dwelling size, increasing number of appliances (more electrical appliances) and central heating diffusion, energy efficiency improvement (as measured from ODEX) and change in behaviour related to more confort.
