Many water bodies are at risk of failing to meet the aim of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) to achieve good status by 2015. Future policies should encourage demand management through actions such as increasing water efficiency. In addition, water management will benefit from applying an ecosystems perspective, using floodplains and groundwater aquifers for storing water, and making room (space) for rivers.</description>

  <description>Average global air and ocean temperatures are rising, leading to the melting of snow and ice
and rising global mean sea level. Ocean acidification results from higher CO2 concentrations.
With unabated greenhouse gas emissions, climate change could lead to an increasing risk of
irreversible shifts in the climate system with potentially serious consequences. Temperature
rises of more than 1.5–2 °C above pre-industrial levels are likely to cause major societal and
environmental disruptions in many regions. The atmospheric CO2 concentration needs to be
stabilised at 350–400 parts per million (ppm) in order to have a 50 % chance of limiting global
mean temperature increase to 2 °C above pre-industrial levels (according to the IPCC in 2007,
and confirmed by later scientific insights).</description>

  <description>   Extremes of cold have become less frequent in Europe while warm extremes have become more frequent. The frequency of hot days almost tripled between 1880 and 2005.   For Europe as a whole heat waves are projected to increase in frequency, intensity and duration, whereas winter temperature variability and the number of cold and frost extremes are projected to decrease further. The European regions projected to be most affected are the Iberian Peninsula, central Europe including the Alps, the eastern Adriatic seaboard, and southern Greece.   </description>

  <description>In Europe, summer heat waves are becoming harder to bear. The demand for air conditioning is on the rise, especially in office buildings. Yet buildings alone represent 40% of the EU's energy consumption, and air conditioning accounts for a significant part of it. In addition, air conditioning produces greenhouse gas emissions, aggravating global warming and putting at risk European climate protection commitments. The solution: reduce the energy requirements of existing air conditioning systems and change the way buildings are designed and used to achieve sustainable summer comfort without active cooling. </description>
