Soil is an important and often neglected element of the climate system. It is the second largest carbon store, or "sink", after the oceans. Restoring key ecosystems on land, and a sustainable use of the land in urban and rural areas, can help us mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The main negative impact on climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, N2O), which is directly or indirectly due to the burning of non-renewable resources (carbon bound in mineral oil or coal). Tropical rainforests hold the biggest living biomass on very delicate soils that may lose their fertility completely when clear cutting is performed as in recent decades.
External Data Spec Forests in the ECE Region - Trends and Challenges in Achieving the Global Objectives on Forests The ECE Region is rich in forest resources with a forest area of 1.89 billion ha – an astounding 41.4% of the global total. Further, the majority of the global wood based production is located in the region and there is increasing recognition of the value of natural capital and forest ecosystem services. Yet the forest sector, as well as many outside of it, is ever more concerned with changes in market prices and supply and demand patterns, production processes and investment as well as the need to improve livelihoods and address the impacts of climate change and loss of biodiversity in the region.
