Publication Water resources: quantity and flows - SOER 2010 thematic assessment
Europe's freshwaters are affected by water scarcity, droughts, floods and physical modifications. Many water bodies are at risk of failing to meet the aim of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) to achieve good status by 2015. Future policies should encourage demand management through actions such as increasing water efficiency. In addition, water management will benefit from applying an ecosystems perspective, using floodplains and groundwater aquifers for storing water, and making room (space) for rivers.

SOER Key fact Water use by agriculture
Across the European Union, agriculture uses about a quarter of water diverted from the natural environment, though this can be up to 80% in southern Europe.

Figure Water Use Intensity (WUI) for citrus across Southern European NUTS2 areas
The map shows the volume of irrigated water used (in m³) for citrus per production value at producer price (values at current prices) in € PPS among different countries in Europe at NUTS2 level. In cases where NUTS2 level data was not available the map shows the result in country level.

Figure Water Used for Irrigation in Europe per NUTS2 Regions (m3/ha)
The map shows Water Used for Irrigation in (m3/ha) among different countries in Europe at NUTS2 level. Irrigation water for kitchen gardens and crops under glass is not included. There is uncertainty if combined use of irrigation drainage system is quantified and included where applied.

Data Waterbase - Emissions to water
Emissions to water are an important element (describing the pressure) in assessment of the state of Europe’s environment (SoE). This database contains data on emissions of nutrients and hazardous substances to water, aggregated within River Basin Districts (RBDs), in the EEA member countries. The reporting process, endorsed by the Water Directors, and this publication of the data, enables all stakeholders to use the data and contributes to streamlining with other reporting processes.
