Ground-level ozone or 'bad' ozone is formed when nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), collectively called 'ozone precursors', react with sunlight. Emissions from car exhausts, power plants and industrial facilities are the major sources of NOx and VOC.
