Air pollution has been one of Europe's main environmental concerns since the late 1970s.

To counteract the problems of air pollution, the EU has adopted a wide range of air quality policies and laws, including a directive on ozone.

The EU aims to ensure that levels of air quality do not pose unacceptable risks to public health and the environment. However, new action is needed to achieve this objective.

At the international level, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme play an important role in the continuing struggle to protect people from air pollution.
