Climate change will affect Europe's cities in different ways. To give an overall impression of the challenge for European cities to adapt to climate change, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has published a series of detailed interactive maps, allowing users to explore data from more than 500 cities across Europe.

What is on this Floods Directive map? River Basin Districts (RBDs) are the main units for the management of river basins and have been delineated by Member States under Article 3 of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). For the Floods Directive, Member States were given the choice to use either the WFD River Basin Districts, or to designate other Units of Management (UoM) for specific river basins or stretches of coastal areas under article 3 of that Directive. For Ireland and Italy such smaller UoM were designated. For the other EU Member States the same RBD as for the WFD therefore applies. The geographic area of some RBDs span more than one country (such as the Danube) and these are known as International RBDs. These RBDs are shown in yellow/orange. Others are contained completely within a country and are known as National RBDs, and are shown in light purple/light blue.

Europe's mountain areas have social, economic and environmental capital of significance for the entire continent. This importance has been recognised since the late 19th century through national legislation; since the 1970s through regional structures for cooperation; and since the 1990s through regional legal instruments for the Alps and Carpathians. The European Union (EU) first recognised the specific characteristics of mountain areas in 1975 through the designation of Less Favoured Areas (LFAs). During the last decade, EU cohesion policy and the Treaty of Lisbon have both focused specifically on mountains.

As Europe’s climate warms, wine producers in Europe may need to change the type of grapes they cultivate or the location of vineyards, even moving production to other areas in some cases. This is just one example of how Europe’s economy and society need to adapt to climate change, as examined in a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA).
