The Earth is rapidly getting warmer, threatening serious and even catastrophic disruption to our societies and to the natural environment on which we depend. Over the course of the 20th century the average temperature increased by around 0.6 C globally, by almost 1 C in Europe and by no less than 5 C in the Arctic. This man-made warming is already having many disruptive effects around the globe.

Sea levels are rising as a result of melting glaciers and ice sheets, threatening to flood low-lying communities. Extreme weather conditions; floods, droughts, storms are becoming more severe, more frequent and more costly in some parts of the world. And many endangered species may be pushed to extinction over the coming decades as climate change affects their traditional habitats.

Renewable energy consumption - outlook from IEA (Outlook 039) - Assessment published Jun 2006

Assessment created 2007 If current technological trends continue and government policies that have been adopted are implemented*,the use of renewable energy in the pan-European region is projected to increase, mainly because of the large increase in OECD Europe. Global renewable energy consumption is projected to increase from 1 475 Mtoe in 2004 to 2 349 Mtoe in 2030. The share of renewables in TEC is projected to increase slightly (from 13 % in 2004 to 14 % in 2030), mainly because of the expected efforts in Europe and North America. Although biomass would lose part of its share to other forms of energy, it is projected to continue to dominate the renewables market in all the regions except the Eastern part of Europe. Hydropower is expected to remain the second largest renewable source, but to remain the most important in the Eastern part of Europe (about 50 % in 2030). Non-hydro renewables** are projected to grow the fastest, but with their share in total energy consumption still only reaching 1.7 % in 2030 - up from 0.5 % today.

Although hydroelectric power stations create power from a reusable resource, there are some concerns about their impact on water. They alter the flow and temperature regimes that destroy fish spawning areas, handicap fish migration, kill fish in turbines and dry out wetlands. They can also capture sediment and nutrients behind dams, which can reduce the fertility of the waters downstream and may also increase erosion of river banks. For instance dams have reduced the sediment carried into Lake Geneva by some 50 %.

Climate change could also make many hydroelectric power plants less reliable in future as water availability changes. While some plants in northern Europe could generate more power, hydroelectric dams in Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and Ukraine could reduce output by 20-50 % because of declining rainfall.

Renewable energy in gross inland energy consumption (CSI 030/ENER 029) - Assessment DRAFT created Jan 2013

The share of renewable energy sources in gross inland energy consumption (GIEC) increased in the EU-27 from 4.2% in 1990 to 9.8% in 2010. The main contributor was biomass and wastes (6.7% of the GIEC in 2010), followed by hydro (1.8%) and wind (0.7%). The gross inland energy consumption from renewable increased at an annual average rate of 4.6%/year over the period 1990-2010 and accelerated (8.2%/year) from 2005 to 2010 (+12.7% in 2010). In 2010, the share of renewable energy in total gross inland energy consumption in EU-15 was 9.9%, which means that the 12% target of renewable by 2010 has not been reached.

In non EU EEA countries the share of renewable in gross inland energy consumption reached 19.8% in 2010. The gross inland energy consumption from renewable increased at an annual average growth rate of 1.4%/year. In these countries, there is also an acceleration in renewable energy consumption since 2005 (by 2.8%/year on average), but the total gross inland consumption continues to grow much faster (3.8%/year).
