EEAFigure The Earth’s biomes and loss of species diversity
The map: Locating biomes (or regional ecosystems) throughout the world. The graph: The bars compare the impacted states of selected biomes (or regional ecosystems) at various historical dates and projected 2050. These impacts are expressed using the Mean species abundance (MSA) indicator.

Publication Towards an early warning and information system for invasive alien species (IAS) threatening biodiversity in Europe
Invasive alien species (IAS) have become a major driver of biodiversity loss, second only to habitat fragmentation in recent decade. Europe is particularly affected by alien species, which are invading the continent an unprecedented pace. Their impact means that many of the region's rarest endemic species are on the brink of extinction and that our well-being and economies are affected. Establishing an early warning and rapid response framework for Europe become a key target. The present publication is the EEA contribution to achieving this goal.

EEAFigure Trend in summer chlorophyll-a concentrations in coastal and open waters of the Baltic, Celtic and Mediterranean Seas and NE Atlantic, 1985-2010
This figure shows stationwise trends in chlorophyll-a concentrations in coastal and open waters of the Baltic, North East Atlantic (Greater North Sea, Celtic Seas, Bay of Biscay), and Mediterranean Sea (Western Mediterranean Sea, Adriatic Sea) (% of stations showing statistically significant change, within the years 1985–2010). Numbers in parentheses indicates number of stations included in the analysis for each country. "Open sea" is the total of all off-shore stations (>20km) within a (sub)region.

SOER Message Urban environment — key message 5
Cities can be considered as 'ecosystems', albeit with a high technical component. Their urban metabolism is an open and dynamic system, which consumes, transforms and releases materials and energy, develops and adapts to changes, and interacts with humans and other ecosystems. Therefore they should be analysed and managed as other ecosystems.

Highlight World Forest Day highlights multiple threats on forests
Forests cover over 30 % of the earth's surface. They are one of the most important 'storehouses' of biological diversity on land and play a key role in regulating our planet's climate. Their importance and the wide array of threats on world's forests are in the spotlight during the World Forest Day 21 March and the UN International Year of Forests 2011.
