Deputy Director Gordon McInnes retires after 20 years at the EEA: Gordon McInnes retired from the European Environment Agency (EEA) yesterday. He has worked at the EEA and its predecessor, the Commission’s Task Force, since 1992.

Changing environmental governance in a changing world: Climate change, growing consumption and urbanisation, spiralling resource use and new health risks are just some of the global pressures the world will face in the 21st Century. These are the findings from the Assessment of Global Megatrends, launched in November 2010 as part of the State and Outlook of the European Environment Report (SOER) and now published in a new book version.

Key message 9 — SOER synthesis: Implementing environmental policies and strengthening environmental governance will continue to provide benefits. Better implementation of sectoral and environmental policies will help ensure that goals are achieved and provide regulatory stability for businesses. A broader commitment to environmental monitoring and up-to-date reporting of environmental pollutants and wastes, using the best available information and technologies, will make environmental governance more effective. This includes reducing long-term remediation costs through early action.

The policies are ranked by adoption rate between start year and 2005 (fastest spreading policies first).
