Reduce, reuse, recycle – the common mantra of waste management makes the process sound simple. But while these three ingredients may be the same, the recipe for sustainable waste management can be very different – and Greenland’s unique environment presents some considerable challenges.

The number of countries achieving defined levels of MSW management in 2001 and 2010. Countries > 25% recycling, > 25% incineration, > 50% landfilling and >75% landfilling. Each country can be included in several waste management categories. Therefore, the total number of countries is greater than 32.

Recycling can meet a large proportion of the economy’s resources demand, alleviating pressure on ecosystems to provide resources and assimilate waste. Recycling already meets substantial proportions of demand for some resource groups, notably paper and cardboard, and iron and steel.

New film on waste management in Greenland

Dealing with large quantities of unwanted (and sometimes toxic) waste is often difficult – but it becomes even more complicated when people live in isolated communities, in extreme environments hundreds of kilometres from the nearest treatment plant. This is the subject of a new film considering waste management in Greenland, entitled ‘Mission Greenland – for a cleaner future’.

Europe appears not to be moving closer to a closed loop society within its internal market. While, yearly recycled quantities of plastic, paper, glass, metals, textiles and wood waste generated in the EU increased by 11.1 million tonnes (7%) between 2004 and 2008, almost all of the increase resulted from a sharp rise in net exports of waste for recycling overseas. Yearly exports of waste for recycling had increased by a further 8 million tonnes by 2010. This may suggest some movement towards a closed loop society when treatment of European waste is viewed from a more global perspective.
