We breathe from the moment we are born until the moment we die. It is a vital and constant need, not only for us but for all life on Earth. Poor air quality affects us all: it harms our health and the health of the environment. It also leads to economic losses. But what does the air we breathe consist of and where do the various air pollutants come from? If you would like to know more about Europe’s air and our work on the environment, we are looking forward to welcoming you on Friday 11 October 2013, starting from 18.00 o’clock in the evening, on the occasion of Copenhagen Culture Night.

Copenhagen Culture Night is the annual event in Copenhagen when the whole city bustles with life and entertainment - museums, libraries, educational establishments, theatres, musical venues and many other institutions representing art and culture offer a wide range of activities, often organised especially for the evening. It is also a unique opportunity for the EEA to welcome Copenhageners and tourists of all ages and backgrounds – families with children, students, environmental enthusiasts and the like – and present the Agency’s work to them.

This year’s programme will include:


18.00 - 20.30	Every breath we take Discover the invisible in Europe’s air and find out how poor air quality affects us everywhere We breathe from the moment we are born until the moment we die. It is a vital and constant need, not only for us but for all life on Earth. Poor air quality affects us all: it harms our health and the health of the environment. It also leads to economic losses. But what does the air we breathe consist of and where do the various air pollutants come from?
18.00 - 20.30	Explore the chemistry of air Check the air pollution levels in Denmark and measure how candles and other sources pollute the air The air pollution levels in the largest cities in Denmark (Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg) are measured all year round. Do you want to know more about air quality where you live? What kind of pollutants do we monitor? How do they affect your health, what do particles do to your lungs? What about pollens? Visit the stand of the DCE - Danish Centre for Environment and Energy of Aarhus University and find out what actually is in the air you breathe in Denmark and where you can get the latest information online. Taking a closer look at a techy air quality measurement device is just a bonus.
18.00 - 20.30	How clean is the air in your town? See what Copenhagen is doing to improve air quality and hear what you can do yourself At the stand of Copenhagen Municipality, you will get the opportunity to learn why the air in your city is polluted. You will get tips on how you can help reduce air pollution that makes people fall sick and causes premature death. A chimney sweeper will show you how to use your fireplace correctly and you will get good ideas about environmentally friendly transportation.
18.00 - 20.30	Is the air good in your home? Go balloon-hunting and learn how you can get cleaner air indoors Poor air quality in your home can cause headaches, fatigue or irritate the mucous membranes. It could also increase the risk of infections, cardiovascular diseases and cancer, and aggravate symptoms in people with allergies and asthma. So is there anything you can do? Can you smell bad air, or should you use your eyes instead or take tests? At the stand of Danish Building Research Institute of Copenhagen’s Aalborg University, you can learn how to prevent dust mites, mould, particles, formaldehyde or radon in your home, and thereby get cleaner air indoors. Children can take part in a balloon treasure hunt for the causes of bad air. Suitable primarily to children between 4-10 years.
18.00 - 20.30	Get tips on how to keep your air clean and healthy Plus play your way around Honoloko island and make the right decisions on air, energy and transport Do something good for your environment and your health! Find your way around Honoloko, an imaginary island where you can make choices about air, energy and transport that will impact the island's inhabitants. Visit the WHO stand to play in English or Danish! You can also talk to WHO experts and learn how the air you breathe can harm your health and what you can do about it. The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nations agency responsible for human health. One of six regional offices, the WHO Regional Office for Europe is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Its European Centre for Environment and Health located in Bonn, Germany is a centre of excellence on environment and health including air pollution. Honoloko is a 3D interactive children's art game developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and the European Environmental Agency.
18:30, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00	Theatre play: The quest for clean air How an evil guy saves the world In a not so distant future, we meet Preben, a janitor, who lives with his loving mother. Preben is an Evil Guy in his own opinion, and takes great pride in that. The two of them live quietly until Preben´s mother gets ill. Preben is forced on a quest to get clean air for his mother, so that she is able to breathe. On his travels he meets pirates, air-sellers, a crazy charter guide and some hardworking factory workers. But will he find the clean air that will save his mother? And if you are trying to save somebody, are you then still evil? Join the young actors of Ballerup Youth School in this one-time performance, put on stage for Culture Night in collaboration with the European Environment Agency. Suitable for children of all ages. 20 min shows
21.00 - 22.30	Concert: Anne Eltard & Polkageist Join the lively power-polka party in the Agency´s cosy courtyard Polkageist is one of the more vivacious bands on the Danish musical scene, playing a wide spectre of styles from Jimi Hendrix to classical music. They will take you on a musical journey throughout the world, in their swinging and charming way and with their exuberant musicality and contagious joyfulness. They have played with a large number of well-known Danish orchestras like the Sneakers, Totalpetroleum, Savage Rose and TV-2. Come and visit the EEA’s cosy courtyard on Kongens Nytorv and hear the band play a mixture of salsa, calypso, funk, rock, polka and much, much more.
