Trends and projections in Europe 2013 – Tracking progress towards Europe's climate and energy targets until 2020

This report provide an assessment of the progress of the EU and European countries towards achieving their climate mitigation and energy policy objectives. These targets include international commitments pursuant the KP and the EU 2020 commitment to reduce by 20 % greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 1990, to create 20 % of energy consumption from renewables and to increase energy efficiency by 20 %. The assessment is based on GHG data for the period 2008–2012, including recent estimates of proxy 2012 GHG emissions, GHG projections until 2020 submitted by Member States in 2013, as well as energy statistics until 2011.

This report provide an assessment of the progress of the EU and European countries towards achieving their climate mitigation and energy policy objectives. These targets include international commitments pursuant the KP and the EU 2020 commitment to reduce by 20 % greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 1990, to create 20 % of energy consumption from renewables and to increase energy efficiency by 20 %. The assessment is based on GHG data for the period 2008–2012, including recent estimates of proxy 2012 GHG emissions, GHG projections until 2020 submitted by Member States in 2013, as well as energy statistics until 2011.

These targets, set under the Renewable Energy Directive, concern the use energy from renewable sources as a proportion of the total energy consumption.
6. Progress of the European Union towards its energy efficiency targets This chapter presents the progress achieved by the European Union in reducing its energy consumption, in view of achieving its 2020 objective on energy efficiency
7. Progress towards Member States' energy efficiency targets This chapter presents the progress achieved by EU Member States towards their national targets on primary energy consumption. Member States had to set these indicative, non-binding targets on primary or final energy consumption for 2020 under the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED).
4. Progress of the European Union towards its renewable energy targets This chapter presents the progress achieved by the European Union in developing renewable energy, in view of achieving its 2020 target. It also presents information on the development of renewable energy specifically for electricity, heating and cooling, and transport.

Overall progress towards the European Union's '20-20-20' climate and energy targets This chapter presents a synthetic overview of the progress achieved by the EU and its Member States in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the use of energy from renewable sources and reducing energy consumption, in view of their 2020 targets.
8. Trends and projections in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey This chapter presents a short overview of greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in the five countries which are members of the European Environment Agency, but not of the European Union.
Background information - Domestic climate and energy targets in the EU This section presents in detail the main climate and energy objectives which the EU and its Member States are committed to achieve by 2020, 2030 and 2050.
Annex 1 Progress towards greenhouse gas emission targets: data and methodology This annex provides technical details on the data and methods used by the EEA to track current and projected progress towards greenhouse gas emission targets in the EU.
3. Progress towards Member States' greenhouse gas emission targets This chapter presents the current progress achieved by EU Member States towards their national annual targets on greenhouse gas emissions. These targets, set under the Effort Sharing Decision (ESD), concern emissions which are not included in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). It also presents an outlook of the projected progress towards ESD targets.
Background information - International climate commitments in Europe This section presents the main climate change mitigation targets and objectives taken by the European Union and other member countries of the European Environment Agency, in particular under the United Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

Trends and projections in Europe 2016
Trends and projections in Europe The EEA’s annual report on Trends and Projections in Europe updates the progress assessments of the EU and European countries towards their climate mitigation and energy targets. It also sets sights forward towards the EU’s 2020 and new 2030 targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy generation and improving energy efficiency. The assessments in the Trends and Projections in Europe report draw on the most recent data on EU and Member States’ progress to their climate and energy targets. These include: EU’s and Member States’ GHG inventory, Member States’ Effort Sharing datasets, Member States’s GHG projections, Proxy estimates of greenhouse gas emissions in the most recent year.
