Key assessment

66 % of the 1 650 special bird areas (SPAs) that are designated by EU Member States (up to 1999) have at least one major transport infrastructure within 5 km of their centres, as have 430 Ramsar sites (wetlands), 63 % of the total. Further expansion of the transport infrastructure and intensification of its use could jeopardise the future of many important designated nature areas. It is also increasingly difficult to designate new areas for protection that are not affected by infrastructure networks.
