The energy efficiency of passenger car transport has improved during the past decade. The voluntary agreement with the car industry to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars, increasing thus the energy efficiency, is making progress towards its target, although continued efforts are still needed. However, rail and maritime shipping remain the most energy-efficient modes of passenger transport.

While the energy efficiency of trucks has remained stable, improvement in efficiency can be observed for rail freight transport. Trucks consume significantly more energy per tonne-km than rail or ship transport.
