The side-event will tackle the maritime dimension of climate change and show the various actions being taken at EU level in relation to climate change in the marine environment and coastal areas. Oceans and seas play a major role in the climate and weather patterns and act as climate regulators. They receive 71 % of the total solar radiation and have to date absorbed half of all fossil fuel emissions. In this context, discussions will address the responsibility of the maritime industries and policy‑makers for providing adequate tools to combat climate change in the maritime field.
Ronan Uhel, head of the Natural Systems and Vulnerability Programme, at EEA, will present the EEA's activities in this area.
Organiser: European Commission, DG MARE
