Imagine all the resources, energy and labour that are used to produce food, cars, clothes, mobile phones and everything we consume. If we do not re-use and recycle them, they could be ending up in landfills or incineration plants. Each year, EU citizens generate an average of half a tonne of household waste per person. Waste can be an economic loss and it can also negatively impact the environment as well as human health.
All the competition winners (Cartoon, Photo, Youth, Video & Public’s Choice) were announced in December 2013.  Take a look at the competition finalists.

How do you see wasted food, construction waste, landfills, composting?
How can we better reduce, re-use or recycle waste?
How can re-using and recycling reduce the demand for extracting new resources?
How do you want Europe’s waste policy to look like in the future?

The European Environment Agency (EEA) invites you to share your views about waste in Europe in a new creative competition, Waste•smART.

Find out more about waste in Europe

The best way to reduce the environmental impacts of waste is to prevent it in the first place. Storing food well, planning your meals, shopping smart and avoiding excessive packaging are all ways to prevent waste. Many items that we throw away could also be re-used, and others can be recycled for raw materials.  Much of the waste we throw away can be recycled. Recycling benefits the environment by diverting waste away from landfills and by providing raw materials for new products. Recycling can also encourage innovation and create jobs.  Diverting waste away from landfills prevents pollution that can harm our health and the environment. Reducing, re-using and recycling waste can bring economic gains and secure access to critical raw materials. More jobs at higher income levels are also created by recycling than by landfilling or incinerating waste.
