Offshore winds are retrieved from satellite data in near-real-time by ENVISAT. The satellite carries advanced synthetic aperture radar (ASAR) which allows wind measurements 24 hours, 365 days a year. The sensor is capable of scanning a 400 km wide swath with a spatial resolution of 100 m for ideally positioning of wind farms. The image shows Denmark in the centre. The different colours in the image indicate wind speeds (blue = 0-5 m per second; red = 15-20m per second). The arrows indicate prevailing wind directions.
