Satellite data can be used to derive information on the coverage of the land. Such information is collected every 3 to 5 years on a European scale to identify how Europe’s landscape is changing. In the present case forests, which act as carbon sinks, are shown in green and urban areas in red. Every day another 10 hectares – the equivalent of 20 football fields – of motorways are constructed in Europe. If you put this development in perspective over a 50-year span, dramatic changes, for example for human quality of life or wildlife migration, are the consequences.
