Growth in CO2 emissions by transport (1990-1998)

Key assessment

Emissions of CO₂ from transport (excluding international aviation and maritime transport) increased by 15% between 1990 and 1998, and now constitute 24 % of total CO₂ emissions. The increase resulted mainly from the growth in road and air transport, since energy efficiency has hardly improved. Road transport is the largest contributor (84 % of transport CO₂ emissions). If this trend persists, this could jeopardise the EU meeting its targets under the Kyoto Protocol.
