Policy issue:  Meet the EU target under the Kyoto Protocol

Figures

Key assessment

Emissions of CO2 from transport (excluding international aviation and maritime transport) increased by 15% between 1990 and 1998, and now constitute 24 % of total CO2 emissions. The increase resulted mainly from the growth in road and air transport, since energy efficiency has hardly improved. Road transport is the largest contributor (84 % of transport CO2 emissions). If this trend persists, this could jeopardise the EU meeting its targets under the Kyoto Protocol.
