Picture2050 – photography competition (CLOSED)

The submissions closed on 15 August and the finalists were selected. Each finalist entry consists of a series of 3 photographs reflecting the participants’ views on these 3 themes: 1) Natural capital, 2) Resource-efficient, low-carbon economy, 3) Human health and well-being. View the finalist entries on our Flickr page.

Competition winners

Competition winners, i.e. the winners of the 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd prize, youth prize and People's Choice Award, were announced on 29 October 2015. Check out the five entries selected by our external jury and the public as winners. 

The winners received a cash prize and all entries may be promoted by the EEA and its partners across Europe.

Our natural environment is the backbone of our health and our economy. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat all depend on healthy ecosystems. Our quality of life is closely linked to the state of the environment we live in. The way we use natural resources puts increasing pressure on the environment, and risks undermining our ecosystems’ ability to continue providing us services.

In its 7^th Environment Action Programme (7EAP), the European Union’s has defined the following long-term vision: ‘In 2050, we live well, within the planet’s ecological limits. Our prosperity and healthy environment stem from an innovative, circular economy where nothing is wasted and where natural resources are managed sustainably, and biodiversity is protected, valued and restored in ways that enhance our society’s resilience. Our low-carbon growth has long been decoupled from resource use, setting the pace for a safe and sustainable global society.’

To participate in ‘Picture2050 – Living well, within the limits of our planet’, participants were asked to depict a personal or a generic story, consisting of three photographs, depicting their vision, interpretation or understanding of ‘living well, within the limits of our planet in 2050’ along the three objectives of the 7EAP:

1. Natural capital
2. Resource-efficient, low-carbon economy; and
3. Human health and well-being.

Submissions consist of three different photographs – one photograph per objective. More concretely, the first photograph should depict the participants view of what nature brings to our society (or to him or herself); the second one the participant’s view of a resource-efficient, low-carbon economy, and the third one the participant’s view of the links between the environment and human health and well-being. Each entrant could submit up to five entries.

Prizes

The winners will be awarded cash prizes of EUR 2000 for the 1st prize, EUR 1500 for the 2nd prize, EUR 1000 for the 3rd prize and EUR 500 for the Public Choice award and the Youth Prize.

The Youth Prize will be awarded to the winning entry, selected from those submitted by persons aged between 18 and 24.

All the finalists will be put forward for the People's Choice Award and may also feature in future digital and print material from the EEA and its European partners.

The copyright of the materials submitted for this competition remains with respective participants. However, each entrant grants the EEA and its partners the right to use the submitted materials in its environmental communication crediting the copyright owners.

Selection process

The EEA will appoint a pre-selection committee consisting of communication and environment experts that will select 30-50 finalists, which will then be submitted to an external jury. The jury composed of environmental communication experts from across Europe will determine the winners, with the exception of the People's Choice Award.

For the People's Choice Award, the finalist entries put forward by the pre-selection committee will be open for a public vote from 15 September to 15 October 2015.

The winners will be notified by email. Therefore it is crucial to provide correct contact information. The announcement of the winners will be made in October 2015.
