Policy issue: Ensure balanced accessibility of regions and markets by different modes of transport
Key messages
Accessibility by road is better than by collective passenger transport, except for connections between city centres. Extensive investments in modern and fast collective transport in rural areas could never achieve the same level of accessibility as by road. In the case of freight transport, carriers favour road transport over inter-modal transport for amongst others its relatively high speed and flexibility. This is an important explanatory factor behind the relatively fast growth of road transport.
