Methodology:
From the available data of the footprint network for individual countries we calculated the food footprint in global hectares / person for each country. This was done by summing up the values for cropland, grazing and fishing for each individual country. We then multiplied this number by the population of each country in order to get the "national food footprint" in global hectares. Summing up the values from all countries, we got a total food footprint in global hectares, which we then further divided by the total population of this region (all countries) in order to get the food footprint in global hectares / person for the region covered by the selected countries. We then indexed this against the 1996 value.
