This figure shows the rate of change of the flowering date for winter wheat. The annual rate of change of the flowering date represents the trend coefficient for long-term changes in the occurrence of flowering of winter wheat in Europe. For example, a value -0.6 indicates that in last 30 years the winter wheat flowering date has been anticipated on average by 0.6 days per year (6 days in 10 years). The flowering date is derived from crop growth models simulating crop development of winter wheat as a function of the temperature sum. The simulation is based on the JRC-MARS gridded meteorological data at 25 km resolution.

Methodology:: From the JRC-MARS gridded agro-meteorological database, meteorological observations of daily air temperature at station level with data available for last 30 years (1985-2014) have been selected. The WOFOST crop model has been used to estimate the day of occurrence of the flowering of winter wheat. The input data for crop model simulations were taken from JRC-MARS crop database: the date of emergence, the temperature sum required to reach flowering, and the base temperature below which crop development stops. Linear trend coefficients of the day of occurrence of flowering for the period 1985-2014 were calculated at all stations selected. Then the trend coefficients were spatially interpolated onto the regular 25 km JRC-MARS grid using the thin plate spline method.
