Methodology:: The latest year for which there are concentration data for groundwater stations available are extracted from Waterbase. The number of stations with annual mean concentrations occurring in the selected concentration bands or classes are then calculated and presented. The class defining values for nitrate in groundwater are based on typical background concentrations (<10 mg NO3/l) and the drinking water parametric value for nitrate of 50 mg NO3/l which is laid down in Council Directive 98/83/EC on the quality of water intended for human consumption.
